Special interview ジュリアード弦楽四重奏団
結成から77年にして、常に弦楽四重奏界のトップを走り続けるジュリアード弦楽四重奏団（以下、JSQ）。メンバーは皆、名門ジュリアード音楽院教授を務めるスーパー・プレイヤー。日本初演曲を引っ提げ、この10月に新潟に降り立ちます。実に5年ぶりとなる日本ツアーに向けて、メンバーにお話しを伺いました。

Q1：ヴィトマンによる委嘱曲の魅力や聴きどころを教えてください。
ヴィトマンが作曲した弦楽四重奏曲には、ベートーヴェンの楽曲でももっとも重要な曲のひとつである、弦楽四重奏曲第13番に影響を受けて作曲した曲が２曲あります。3楽章から成る第8番はベートーヴェンの奇抜な音楽言語に影響を受けたようで、とても軽妙で楽しい曲調です。一方、第10番の緩徐楽章はベートーヴェンのカヴァティーナで受けた深い感情を写し出した作品になっています。今回のプログラムは、いかに偉大で音楽的なインスピレーションが時代を超越して継承されているかということを感じていただける良いプログラムではないかと思います。彼らが作り出すものには、世代から世代だけではなく世紀も超えてその創造に関わった人の非常に人間的なアイデアや感情が受け継がれているのです。
Q2：昨年の世界初演、またはヨーロッパ初演でのお客さんのリアクションはどうでしたか？
2022 年秋の2つの弦楽四重奏曲の世界＆ニューヨーク初演は、聴衆の大きな熱狂に包まれ大盛会でした。 第10番「カヴァティーナ」のヨーロッパでの初演も大変好評でした。第8番はまだヨーロッパではまだ演奏されていません。
Q3：JSQにとってのベートーヴェンとは？
ベートーヴェンは人々から広く愛されている作曲家です。彼の音楽は私たちのレパートリーの核心的な存在であり、私たちの音楽的教材、また弦楽四重奏曲を演奏する情熱そのものです。シェイクスピアと同様、人間の本性や私たちを駆り立てる感情についてのベートーヴェンの解釈は、今でも力強く現代に受け継がれています。私たちJSQにとって、ベートーヴェンは創造性、発明、劇的な力と美しさの模範となっています。彼の音楽はあらゆる人に何かを提供し、常に想像力を掻き立ててくれるものです。
Q4：今回のプログラム名である「カヴァティーナ」に込めた想いをお聞かせください。
カヴァティーナは非常に特別な音楽です。ベートーヴェンの弦楽四重奏曲 作品130 のこの歌心に満ちた楽章は、弦楽四重奏作品の中で最も短いものの、しかし力強い作品の 1 つです。ベートーヴェンはどのようにして、これほどまでにコンパクトな形式で、こんなにも胸を打つ美しい音楽を生み出すことができたのでしょうか？ それは、私たちがこの曲を演奏するために座るたびに興味をそそられる問です。カヴァティーナを聴くと、毎回感動を覚えます。 きっと、長調の中で最も悲しい曲でしょう。そして、ベートーヴェンの「カヴァティーナ」は何世代にも渡ってたくさんの人を魅了してきた曲として、ボイジャー計画のミッションで無人惑星探査機ボイジャーに搭載された“ゴールデン・レコード”の最後に収録されているんですよ。

Q6：これまでの日本公演で印象に残っていることはありますか？
日本は素晴らしい思い出に満ち溢れています。おいしい日本料理、美しい環境、フレンドリーな人々！ しかし、日本での一番の思い出は、やはり華やかで活気に満ちた日本のコンサートホールです。そこで演奏できるのは毎回本当に嬉しく、わたしたちにとっての最大の喜びなのです。
Q7：日本で楽しみにしていることは何ですか？
皆様とお会いできること、そして、ベートーヴェンとヴィトマンを同じ空間で共有できることをとても楽しみにしています！

1)What is the appeal of the commissioned piece by Widmann?
and what are the highlights the audience expects to hear in it?
There are two separate quartets that Jörg Widmann wrote inspired by his reactions to Beethoven’s monumental Quartet in Bb Major, op 130. His quartet number 8 is a 3-movement work that seems to be inspired by the quirkiness of Beethoven’s musical language. It is somewhat light, and generally fun. His quartet number 10, on the other hand, is an extended slow movement, written to reflect his deeply felt response to the Cavatina movement of Beethoven’s quartet.
I think the audience can hear in the program that we are offering a wonderful example of how a great deal of musical inspiration can be passed down, not only from generation to generation, but from century to century, reflecting the timelessness of the very human ideas and emotions involved in their creation.
2)How did the audience enjoy the piece at the world premiere and European premiere last year?
The world and New York premieres of the two quartets in the fall of 2022 were greated with a great deal of enthusiasm from audiences. The European premiere of Quartet no. 10, “Cavatina” was also very warmly received. Quartet no. 8 has not yet been played in Europe.
3) What does the composer Beethoven mean to you all?
Beethoven is universally beloved as a composer. His music is at the heart of our
concert repertoire; our musical education and passion for string quartet playing. Like
Shakespeare, Beethoven’s understanding of human nature and the emotions that drive
us remains powerful and relevant to the present day.
For our quartet, Beethoven serves as a model of creativity, invention, dramatic power
and beauty. His music offers something for everyone and never fails to capture the
imagination.
4) Please tell us your thoughts behind the title of this program “Cavatina”.
The Cavatina is a very special piece of music. This songful movement from
Beethoven’s Quartet Op.130, is one of the shortest, yet powerful pieces in the string
quartet repertoire. How did Beethoven manage to create such heartbreakingly beautiful
music in such a compact form? It is a question that intrigues us each time we sit down
to play the piece.
When listening to the Cavatina, one feels transported. It is, perhaps, the saddest piece
in a major key. And, as a work that has shaped the listening experience for generations
of audiences, the Cavatina was selected as the final entry on the Golden Record
aboard the Voyager Space Mission.
5) How would you describe “JSQ sound” in one word?
Wholeheartedness!!
6) Do you have any special impressions or memories in Japan so far?
Japan is full of wonderful memories for me. The delicious Japanese cuisine, the beautiful surroundings, the friendly people! But my fondest memories of Japan have to be the gorgeous and vibrant Japanese concert halls. Getting to perform in them feels like a real treat for us every time.
7) What are you looking forward to in Niigata, Tokyo, Hyogo and Nagano?
We are very much looking forward to reuniting with our audiences there and sharing this special program of Beethoven and Widmann with them!
